Before your class
What to bring & class rules
Before you attend any Lead Bunker training class — especially the Michigan CPL course — here's what to pack, what to know, and the rules everyone follows. Please read all of this before your class.
What to bring
- Valid photo ID — driver's license, state ID, or passport. Required by federal law.
- Your firearm — semi-automatic pistol or revolver, clean and in working order. Rentals available if you don't own yet (ask in advance).
- Ammunition — minimum 100 rounds in the caliber of your firearm. Factory-loaded only. No reloads, steel-core, or tracer.
- Eye and ear protection — we can sell or rent if you don't have your own.
- Closed-toe shoes — no sandals, no flip-flops. Hot brass and bare skin don't mix.
- Comfortable clothing — long pants and a high-neck shirt are smart. Avoid open V-necks and low-cut tops (hot brass).
- Hat with a brim — strongly recommended, especially indoors.
- Pen and notebook — there is a written portion.
- Water and lunch / snacks — CPL classes run a full 8 hours.
- Patience — we teach first-timers and 30-year shooters in the same room. Everyone learns at their own pace.
Michigan CPL eligibility
The Lead Bunker CPL course satisfies the Michigan firearms training requirement. After you complete the class, you submit your application to your county clerk. To be eligible for a CPL in Michigan, you must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
- Be a Michigan resident for at least 6 months (or active-duty military stationed in MI)
- Have no felony convictions and no certain misdemeanor convictions within the past 8 years
- Not be subject to a court order finding you mentally incompetent
- Not be subject to a Personal Protection Order
- Not be dishonorably discharged from the military
- Have not been diagnosed with certain disqualifying conditions

Universal firearm safety
The four rules — every time, no exceptions
- Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Even when you "know" it's empty.
- Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. Muzzle awareness, all the time.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you've made the decision to fire.
- Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Bullets go through things. Know what's down range.
Classroom & range conduct
What we expect during class
- Firearms enter the classroom UNLOADED. Magazine out. Chamber empty. Action open. If you're not sure how to safely unload your firearm, ask a staff member to help you before entering the building — we'd rather help than have an incident.
- Bring your firearm in a case. Soft or hard, doesn't matter — just contained while you're walking through the parking lot and into the shop.
- No live ammunition on the classroom tables. Keep loaded mags and loose rounds in your range bag during the classroom portion. Live fire happens on the range, not in the classroom.
- No alcohol or impairment of any kind, before or during the class. If we suspect impairment we'll send you home and you'll need to re-book.
- Phones on silent. Family emergencies excepted — step outside to take the call.
- If something feels unsafe, speak up. Tap the nearest instructor. We'd rather pause and reset than push through an awkward moment.
- Range commands are immediate. When an RSO calls "cease fire," everyone stops — finger off trigger, muzzle down range, wait for the next command.
